Product Overview

The Piece

Circa late 1960s Park Sherman mechanical postal scale.
Faux woodgrain body with black side panels, metal weighing platform, and printed postage-rate display.
Marked Park Sherman / Div. of K & McD, Inc. / Roseland, N.J., U.S.A. on the underside.

This vintage desk postal scale was made by Park Sherman for weighing letters and small parcels up to 16 ounces. The front display includes ounce markings and postage categories for 1st Class, Airmail, and 3rd Class, with printed rate references dated 1968. The display also notes “Not Legal for Trade” and “Over 16 ounces use zone rates.”

The scale has a compact mid-century office look, with a woodgrain-patterned front, black molded body, slanted rate window, knurled adjustment knob, and brushed metal weighing platform. It is the kind of object that makes mailing a letter feel weirdly official, back when bureaucracy at least had better knobs.

Condition + Updates

Good vintage condition with age-appropriate wear throughout. The metal weighing platform shows scratches, dulling, smudges, and surface wear. The black side panels show scuffs, marks, and handling wear. The faux woodgrain front panel has light scratches and edge wear.

The postal rate window remains readable, including the ounce scale, 1st Class, Airmail, and 3rd Class rate sections. The adjustment knob is present. The underside maker and patent markings are visible and readable. Functional and tested, working.

Historical Context

Park Sherman produced a range of mid-century desk, office, smoking, and utility accessories, including postal scales, letter holders, calendars, lighters, and executive desk objects. This scale reflects the analog office era, when postage was calculated manually using printed rate charts and small mechanical balances.

The visible 1968 postage-rate reference places this piece firmly in the late 1960s. Its categories for 1st Class, Airmail, and 3rd Class reflect the postal structure of the period, while the compact faux woodgrain body fits the office design language of the decade. It belongs to the world of typewriters, carbon paper, mailrooms, and people who probably owned one good stapler and guarded it like a family heirloom.

Why This Belongs in Your Home

This scale works beautifully as a vintage office object, desk accessory, postal collectible, or shelf styling piece. The faux woodgrain front, black body, colored rate chart, and brushed metal platform give it strong mid-century visual texture without taking up much space.

It pairs well with typewriters, brass desk accessories, old stamps, letter openers, vintage paperweights, industrial shelving, apothecary drawers, and office ephemera. Whether used as decor or tested for light weighing, it brings in that analog charm modern shipping software will never understand, mostly because software has no soul and somehow still asks for updates.
