The Piece
This set of two vintage plates was produced by Mikasa as part of the Potters Art line and designed by Ben Seibel, one of the most influential American industrial designers of the mid-20th century. Dating to the 1950s, these plates reflect Seibel’s signature approach—balancing organic form, subtle texture, and everyday usability.
Each plate features a softly crackled ivory glaze framed by concentric ring detailing in a warm, muted brown tone. The surface texture is intentional and tactile, designed to age gracefully and develop character over time rather than remain pristine. The form is clean, grounded, and quietly modern—decorative without relying on ornament.
The underside bears the original Mikasa Potters Art mark with Ben Seibel attribution, Japan origin, and production code, confirming authenticity and period manufacture.
These are not decorative novelties. They are functional design objects made during a moment when American modernism actively reshaped the domestic table.
