The Piece

A gentleman's dresser-top valet from a New York name that once meant something. The case is finished in black textured leather with a fine gilt line around the edge and a brass thumb-clasp, opening on a hinge to an interior of deep red crushed velvet. Inside: a row of slotted bars sized for cufflinks and studs, a soft ring rail, an open well for a watch or loose change, and a lift-up lid panel — all the small architecture of a mid-century morning routine. The lid is stamped in gilt script Shields, above the firm's crest: a coroneted shield with three stars and a bend, set on a black satin ground.

It has the quiet confidence of an object made for daily ritual — the case a good watch and a pair of monogrammed cufflinks came home in.

History & Provenance

Shields Fifth Avenue was a prestige New York house of the 1940s through the late 1960s, carrying only its own exclusive men's jewelry — cufflinks, studs, tie bars — and the fitted cases to keep them in. Their coroneted crest was a mark of that self-contained world of mid-century men's furnishings, when a dresser valet was as much a part of getting dressed as the cufflinks it held. The firm closed at the end of the 1960s, which makes its cases small, dateable artifacts of a particular American idea of understated luxury.
