The Piece

A cargo bib overall cut wide and worn loose — full through the seat and thigh, straight to the ankle, and long enough to take a deep roll cuff over a boot. This is not a slim overall with pockets added. The whole line of it is generous, and the weight of the cloth is what keeps that volume reading as intentional rather than sloppy.

Seven pockets, and every one of them earns its place. A deep patch pocket on the bib carries our botanical V, embroidered in outline: the same monogram that hangs on the door at the Morris. Below the bib, two snap-flap pockets sit at the waist where your hands naturally fall. Two more open at the hip for warmth or for keys. And on each thigh, a full cargo pocket under a snapped flap — sized for a tape measure, a phone, a folding rule, or a fistful of hardware you did not plan on carrying.

The straps run over the shoulder and adjust through metal sliders, hooking down to the bib. Antiqued shank buttons close the side tabs at the waist, so the fit takes in without touching the straps. The cloth is washed before it ever reaches you, faded along the seams, the pocket edges, and the crease lines.

Offered in two colorways: Washed Black, with the monogram picked out in cream, and Field Olive, with the monogram worked tonally in a deeper shade of the ground.

The Making

We do not weave cloth or sew garments, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. What we do is specify, and then hold the maker to it. This overall is produced for us to our own spec: heavyweight cotton rather than a blend, and metal hardware throughout, because plastic snaps fail exactly when you are carrying something.

The monogram is embroidered rather than printed. Print sits on top of cotton and eventually leaves; stitching goes into the cloth and fades at the same rate as everything around it, which means the mark ages with the garment instead of peeling off it. It is the botanical V drawn for Viridian Eclection — a letterform grown through leaves and a rising bud — the same mark on our door, our paper, and the apron.

Everything in the Goods line is named for the Morris, the 1931 building on East Fourth Street where the shop lives. The Morris Apron came first. This is the second.

Why You'll Reach For It

An overall solves a problem trousers do not: it covers the front of you, it carries things, and it never needs a belt or a second thought. We wear these in the shop for exactly that reason — hauling, refinishing, staging a window, standing on a ladder at eight in the morning. With seven pockets you stop setting things down, which is the single largest cause of losing them.

Outside the shop it reads differently. Cuffed over a boot with a plain tee underneath, the wide leg is the whole point — this is the silhouette people are actually wearing, cut in cloth heavy enough to hold it. Washed Black goes anywhere. Field Olive is the one you will reach for more often than you expect. Both get better with washing, which is the honest test of any cotton garment. Buy it to work in, and it will still be the thing you put on for a Saturday.
