The top is cut with a scalloped, serpentine edge, which gives the table a flowing decorative profile rather than a plain flat one. The legs are cabriole, gently curved and tapering downward.
The legs are joined by ornate carved scrollwork stretchers, which are decorative as much as structural, and a small circular platform shelf sits near the base, adding stability and giving a resting surface for small objects.
History & Provenance
The table blends Rococo Revival with the Victorian parlor idiom. The scrollwork and the curves recall Rococo motifs, which were popular through the middle and later nineteenth century, while the cabriole leg is a hallmark of the European inspired furniture of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
The solid dark wood and the practical small form are consistent with late Victorian and Edwardian decorative furniture made for parlors and drawing rooms.
