The Piece
Vintage Italian bas-relief commemorative wall plaque honoring Giacomo Puccini’s Madama Butterfly.
Marked MCMIV for 1904, the year of the opera’s premiere, and MCMLXXVII for 1977.
Back label notes a limited edition of AD 1200, handmade in Tuscany under the auspices of Museo Teatrale alla Scala.
This sculptural wall plaque depicts a raised theatrical scene from Madama Butterfly, with the two central figures placed against an architectural terrace, distant ship, arched bridge, mountains, and floral borders. The composition is deeply dimensional, with the figures and botanical elements standing proud from the surface in molded relief.
The plaque has an ivory-toned finish that gives it the appearance of carved stone or alabaster, though based on construction it is best described as a molded decorative plaque rather than stone. The reverse includes an inset metallic commemorative label and original hanging ring for wall display.

Historical Context
Madama Butterfly is one of Puccini’s most recognized operas, first performed at La Scala in Milan in 1904. This plaque appears to have been issued in 1977 as part of a commemorative Italian limited edition honoring the opera and its theatrical legacy.
The back label connects the piece to the Museo Teatrale alla Scala, placing it within the world of Italian opera, stage history, and Puccini collecting. That makes this more specific than a decorative plate. It belongs to the crossover category of opera memorabilia, Italian decorative arts, and vintage theatrical collectibles. Finally, a plate with a résumé. Humanity survives another day.
Condition + Updates
This piece is in good vintage condition with visible age-appropriate surface wear.
There is light dust and patina in the recessed areas of the relief, minor surface marks, and small scuffs visible on the reverse. The raised figural and floral details appear intact from the photos, with no major cracks visible. Original hanging hardware remains attached.
As with all vintage and antique pieces, minor imperfections are part of the object’s age, history, and character.
Why This Belongs in Your Home
This plaque has the kind of niche, educated presence that works beautifully in a library, music room, gallery wall, study, powder room, or layered old-world interior. It brings in opera history, Italian craftsmanship, and sculptural texture without feeling overly ornate or precious.
It is especially well-suited for collectors of Puccini, La Scala memorabilia, Italian decorative objects, or theatrical art. Hung alone, it reads as a refined statement piece. Styled into a gallery wall, it adds dimension and cultural weight, which is more than most wall decor can say while dangling there doing absolutely nothing.
