The Set
A vintage set of black composition dominoes paired with a warm wooden roll top storage box.
The dominoes have black rectangular bodies with white pips and divided faces, and several pieces show a raised textured pattern on the back. The pips are inset or painted into the faces.
The box has a glossy amber toned wood finish, a curved roll top lid built from narrow vertical sections, a rounded side profile, a rectangular base with raised sides, a small front pull, and a tray style interior.
The box and the dominoes were found separately, so this is a paired vintage game set rather than a confirmed original matching set.
History & Provenance
The dominoes appear to be made from black composition, an early plastic or phenolic style material. Without testing they cannot be listed as Bakelite, so the material is described as composition or early plastic.
The dominoes read as older than the box and are best dated circa 1940s to 1950s on the evidence of material, surface wear, styling, and construction. The amber finish and clean construction of the box suggest a circa 1950s to 1960s production date.
Dominoes were a popular household and parlor game throughout the twentieth century, made in bone, celluloid, composition, early plastics, and later molded plastics. Black tiles with white pips were especially common in mid century sets and remain the strongest of the type to display.
Wooden roll top game boxes became popular for tabletop storage because they kept the pieces contained while still looking finished enough to leave out in a room.

Why It Belongs in Your Home
The pairing works because the two halves do different things. The black tiles bring graphic contrast, and the amber wood box brings warmth and polish.
It suits a coffee table, a game shelf, a bar cart, a den, a library, or a guest room, where a closed roll top box reads as furniture rather than as storage.
If the set proves complete it remains playable, and if not it holds its place as a decorative vintage game object. Either reading gives a table more character than a modern boxed set.
