A vintage hand crank coffee grinder built on a wooden box base, with a blue and white ceramic hopper above and a metal crank at the top.
The hopper is painted with a Dutch windmill in a pastoral landscape, in cobalt blue on white. The crank is manual, of silver tone metal, and turns on a blue and white ceramic knob.
Below, the wooden base is made as a small box with a pull-out drawer to catch the grounds. The drawer pull is a white ceramic knob.
The palette is warm medium wood, white ceramic, cobalt blue and silver tone metal. Wood, metal and ceramic all carry age consistent wear.
History & Provenance
The grinder carries no maker's mark noted, so the attribution rests on form and decoration rather than on a stamp.
The construction is the standard European country pattern: a boxed wooden base with a collecting drawer, a ceramic hopper set into the top, and a crank driven burr between them. Grinders of this type were made in quantity for domestic kitchens.
The decoration places it in the Dutch blue and white tradition, where windmill and pastoral scenes were the common vocabulary for export and domestic wares alike. The dating is not established by any mark, so the period is to be confirmed.
