Product Overview
The Piece
A mid-20th-century Japanese export porcelain teapot, marked “Hong Soo – Made in Japan,” finished in classic white glaze and decorated with a cobalt blue floral and berry motif inspired by long-standing European blue-and-white traditions.
Produced during the post-war export era, this teapot reflects the moment when Japanese ceramic manufacturers re-established themselves as global suppliers of high-quality household wares for Western markets. These pieces were designed to be practical, durable, and visually familiar to American and European buyers, blending traditional forms with accessible decorative patterns.
The silhouette is balanced and functional: a gently rounded body, a smoothly arched handle designed for comfortable grip, a cleanly formed spout for controlled pouring, and a fitted lid with vent hole. The decoration is crisp and evenly applied, with grape- or berry-like clusters and trailing leaves arranged rhythmically across the surface, anchored by double cobalt banding at the rim and lid.
This is not a reproduction or decorative novelty. It is a genuine, mid-century domestic object made to be used, preserved, and lived with.
Maker & Origin
Hong Soo
Country of origin: Japan
Marking: “Hong Soo – Made in Japan” (underside)
“Hong Soo” is understood to be an export or distributor mark, rather than the name of a specific kiln. This practice was extremely common in Japanese ceramics produced for Western export between the 1950s and 1970s, where manufacturing was handled by established regional factories and finished goods were branded under export house names for international sale.
The presence of a clear “Made in Japan” stamp confirms post-Occupation production, placing this piece after 1952.

Why It Belongs in Your Home
This teapot carries the quiet charm of objects that were made to be useful first and beautiful second. It works effortlessly in spaces that value warmth and authenticity: open kitchen shelving, breakfast nooks, cottage or farmhouse interiors, or layered tabletop displays.
It doesn’t perform nostalgia. It earns it.
Placed among wood, linen, and other ceramic forms, it reads as collected and personal rather than styled or curated. The kind of piece that looks like it has always been there.
