Product Overview
The Piece
A pair of vintage Japanese lacquer-style trinket dishes, produced for export in the mid-20th century and finished with delicate, hand-applied detailing. These pieces combine a molded base with subtle human variation in the decorative work—resulting in a balance between production and individuality.
Each dish features a sculptural, organic form with a deep black interior framed by a vivid red lacquer-style edge. The interior is adorned with gold botanical motifs, including bamboo and floral elements, applied with slight variation that gives each piece its own character.
Compact and versatile, they function easily as catchalls for jewelry or small objects, while maintaining a strong visual presence through contrast and form.
Historical Context
Following World War II, Japan became a major exporter of decorative goods to Western markets. During the 1950s through the 1970s, lacquer-style wares were widely produced, combining traditional aesthetic influences with accessible materials and manufacturing methods.
While many pieces were molded and finished in batches, it was common for artisans to hand-apply decorative elements, resulting in subtle inconsistencies that distinguish them from purely machine-made items. These objects were sold as giftware and home accents, often bridging the gap between craft tradition and modern design.

Why It Belongs in Your Home
These sit in that rare middle ground—designed objects that still feel human.
They’re not perfectly uniform, and that’s exactly the point. The slight inconsistencies in the decoration give them a presence that more modern, factory-perfect pieces tend to lack. Small in scale, but intentional in design, they add a layer of texture and contrast without taking over a space.
- ideal for jewelry, keys, or small objects
- works in both modern and collected interiors
- adds depth through material and finish rather than size
