The Piece
This vintage solid copper plate was produced by Metropolitan Copper in the mid-20th century, circa 1940s–1960s. Made from solid copper and finished with a softly rolled rim, the plate reflects the restrained, functional design approach that defined American copperware in the postwar era.
The surface shows fine, even wear consistent with age, resulting in a warm, natural patina that highlights the material rather than obscuring it. The maker’s mark remains clearly stamped at the center, anchoring the piece in both origin and authenticity.
Design & Construction
The plate is machine-spun from solid copper, producing a clean, symmetrical profile with subtle concentric tooling marks visible under light. The rolled edge provides structural integrity and a finished silhouette without decorative excess.
Its shallow depth allows it to function equally well as a display object, serving piece, or wall-mounted accent.
Materials
→ Solid copper
→ Natural aged patina
No coatings or plating detected.
Condition
Vintage condition consistent with age. Surface scratches and wear are present and expected for copper of this era. No dents or structural damage observed. The plate has not been polished to preserve its natural patina.
History & Context
Metropolitan Copper produced a wide range of household copper goods during the mid-20th century, emphasizing durability, honest materials, and simple form. Pieces like this were intended for everyday use but have endured as collectible objects due to the longevity of solid copper and the timelessness of their design.
Why It Belongs in Your Space
This plate adds warmth and material depth without dominating a room. It works beautifully styled on a shelf, layered into a tabletop vignette, or mounted as part of a copper wall arrangement. Its appeal is quiet, tactile, and enduring.
