Vintage Pair of Italian Grape Harvest Crocks, Ochre Glaze, Ceramica Alfa, Made in Italy, c. 1960–1975

The Piece

Two small crocks in deep harvest ochre, the glaze pooling honey-dark in the recesses and rubbing to bronze on the high points. Each carries a molded grape cluster with vine leaves and a curling tendril on the front face, framed top and bottom by a crisp dentil band that reads like stitching around the rim and foot. The rolled lips are generous, the walls straight and honest, and the pair matches without being identical — the small variances of a mold-and-hand operation. Both stamped CER. ALFA ITALY to the base.

History & Provenance

Ceramica Alfa was one of the small Italian workshops feeding the postwar export trade — the same wave that filled American kitchens with Italian earthenware in the sixties and seventies, when "Made in Italy" on the bottom of a crock meant a real pottery, a real glaze dip, and a mold with some sculpture in it. Little cylinder crocks like these did unglamorous work: mustard pots, jam jars, toothpick and match holders on the back of the stove. The grape-and-dentil dressing lifts them past the job description, and the ochre is exactly the gold that era loved — the true, food-warm version of the color, not the avocado-adjacent imitators. Pairs that stayed together for sixty years are the exception; singles are what usually survive.
