Three vintage croquet mallets marked Parkside, each with a wooden shaft and a solid cylindrical wooden head.
The heads are capped in white at both ends and banded in painted color. Across the set the bands run red, green, blue and black, which is how players kept their mallets and balls matched.
The grip section of each handle is turned, with ringed carving worked into the wood to give purchase. The natural wood carries a warm tone and a vintage patina.
Displayed together, the long linear shafts and striped heads give the group a sculptural rhythm.
History & Provenance
Each mallet head is marked Parkside, which gives the maker's name.
No date appears on the set. The turned grips, the painted banding and the white capped heads are consistent with mid century sporting goods production, but a firm date is to be confirmed.
Croquet equipment of this kind belongs to a long tradition of American lawn sport, made in wood with painted color coding before molded plastic replaced it. The wooden mallet has a weight and a sound that the later versions never matched, which is why sets like this continue to be kept and used.
