Product Overview

Vintage Pilkington Aztec Calendar Tile c. 1970s | Reno, NV Antiques

Vintage Pilkington England ceramic tile with black Aztec calendar motif, c. 1970s. Graphic collectible tile for shelf, wall, or tabletop styling.

The Piece

A striking vintage ceramic decorative tile by Pilkington England, featuring a bold black-and-white interpretation of the Aztec calendar / sun stone motif. The design is densely detailed, graphic, and architectural, with the kind of high-contrast surface that immediately earns its place in a collected interior.

The tile has a square ceramic body with a glossy cream-white face and black circular calendar design. The reverse is molded and marked “PILKINGTON ENGLAND,” with additional factory reference markings. It has enough age and surface character to feel authentic, but still presents cleanly enough for modern styling, which is more than can be said for half the objects people insist are “boho.”

Historical Context

Pilkington’s was one of England’s notable ceramic tile manufacturers, with roots reaching back to the late 19th century. While the company is often associated with architectural tilework and decorative ceramics, this piece appears to belong to a later mid-to-late 20th century decorative tile tradition, likely c. 1970s.

The imagery references the famous Aztec Sun Stone, often casually called an “Aztec calendar” or “Mayan calendar” in decorative arts. Its circular geometry, central face, and dense symbolic patterning made it a popular motif in 20th-century global-inspired interiors, especially during the 1960s and 1970s when archaeological and ethnographic design references became common in home décor.

Why It Belongs In Your Home

This tile works because it has contrast, texture, and instant graphic presence. It is small enough to style anywhere, but visually strong enough to anchor a shelf, bookcase, console, or layered vignette.

Use it as a standalone decorative object, frame it as wall art, place it on a small easel, or style it flat beneath a candle, vessel, or sculptural object. The black-and-cream palette makes it especially easy to pair with wood, leather, stone, iron, linen, and other natural materials.

It brings a collected, traveled feeling without trying too hard. Which is rare, because most “worldly” décor looks like it was panic-bought near a checkout line.

Minor surface marks, faint glaze wear, small edge imperfections, and age-related discoloration or residue on the reverse are present. No major cracks are visible in the provided photos. Final condition should be reviewed from images before purchase, because ceramics enjoy hiding tiny sins until someone gets emotionally invested.
