Vintage Portuguese Blue & White Floral Tile Plaque c.1950s

The Piece

A mid century decorative ceramic tile carrying a classic cobalt blue floral motif on a bright white ground, likely produced in Portugal during the 1950s or 1960s.

The botanical brushwork is simple and direct, set within a hand outlined cobalt border. The brushwork is slightly irregular in the way hand decoration always is, with subtle tonal variation in the cobalt pigment. The body is traditional white glazed porcelain.

Unlike most loose export tiles of the period, this example has been mounted on a deep blue velvet backing. That turns a simple architectural tile into a finished decorative object, suitable for tabletop display, for use as a trivet, or for hanging. The velvet adds visual polish and practical function, protecting surfaces while giving the tile a display quality rarely seen in loose examples.

Compact and elegant, it carries the long appeal of blue and white ceramics, a palette that has held its place in interiors for centuries, from Delft and Portuguese azulejos through to modern coastal rooms.

History & Provenance

Portugal has a long and celebrated history of ceramic production, particularly in cobalt blue and white glazing. The monumental architectural azulejo tiles are the most famous expression of it, but smaller decorative tiles were produced in quantity through the middle of the twentieth century for export markets.

During the 1950s and 1960s Portuguese workshops turned out large numbers of hand painted decorative tiles for the European and American home decoration market. These were often sold individually or built into trivets, plaques and framed wall pieces.

The simplified floral motif here is a stylized reading of traditional Portuguese botanical decoration, painted with soft strokes rather than fine detail.

The tile carries no workshop mark, so the attribution rests on idiom and construction: the hand painted cobalt floral design, the deep cobalt border framing the composition, the white glazed body and the classic Portuguese palette. On that basis the origin is given as likely Portuguese and the date as approximately the 1950s to 1960s. The velvet mount suggests it was prepared for gift or retail presentation at the time.
