Vintage Red Leather Kiss-Lock Clutch Purse, Monogrammed, c. 1950–1975

The Piece

A red leather clutch purse with a double kiss-lock coin frame, closing under a strap set with an engraved brass monogram plate.

The colour is a true pillar-box red rather than a burgundy or a rust, and the leather has taken on the soft sheen that only comes from being carried. The front strap folds over from the back and holds on two snaps, and set into it is an oval brass plate with a raised bezel, engraved with a single flourished script initial. That plate is the whole point of the design: it is the one element with any decoration on it and everything else is left plain to let it read.

Behind the strap sits the coin frame, a gold-tone double kiss-lock opening to two separate compartments lined in bright red cloth, each closing with its own ball clasp. Open the purse out and the other half carries a long bill section, a run of card windows in clear vinyl with the original paper insert still in place, and a small leather tab with a second monogram bezel on it.

The snaps are stamped STAR around the rim with a small star between the words.

History & Provenance

This is the classic American small leather goods form of the post-war decades. A clutch purse built around an integral coin frame, with a bill section and card windows behind it, was what a woman carried inside a handbag or on its own to a lunch, and it went out of fashion as coins stopped mattering and card wallets got slimmer.

The monogram plate dates it as much as anything. Engraved brass initial plates were a standard American department store offering through the middle of the century: you bought the piece and the counter engraved it while you waited, which is why so many survive with somebody else's initial on them. It was an ordinary courtesy then and it is not offered on small leather goods now.

The clear vinyl card windows point the same way, since vinyl only became standard in wallet interiors after the war, and the paper insert still sitting in the first window has never been filled in.

The leather itself carries the age. There is genuine crazing across the flap and along the folds, the kind of fine surface cracking that develops over decades as the finish hardens and the hide moves underneath it, and the piece has stiffened into the shape it was carried in. None of that is damage, it is the record of use.

There is no maker's name on it, so none is claimed. It is offered as c. 1950 to 1975.

Red is the colour that makes this worth carrying rather than storing. A red leather clutch is the one accessory that works against black, navy, camel and denim without matching any of them, and at seven inches it takes a phone, cards and keys and nothing else, which is the point.

The coin frame is the part people fall for. Two compartments that snap shut with a real mechanism, lined in red cloth, opening with the sound that no zip has ever managed. Buy it to use, or keep it on a dresser holding earrings and hair pins, which is what most of these end up doing and what they are very good at.
