The Piece
Coordinating Sabin Crest-O-Gold porcelain handled tray and small bowl set, c. 1940s–1960s.
Cream porcelain bodies with wide Warranted 22K gold borders, Colonial Revival figural scenes, floral scroll decoration, and stamped Sabin Crest-O-Gold marks.
The larger tray includes an arched gilt metal handle and decorative metal rim.
This mid-century Sabin Crest-O-Gold set pairs a handled porcelain tray with a small coordinating bowl, both decorated with romantic Colonial Revival scenes and heavy gold ornamentation. The larger tray shows a dancing or courtship scene at center, framed by a wide metallic gold border and an ornate gilt metal rim with a raised arched handle. The smaller bowl features a seated courting couple scene with a matching gold border and scrollwork decoration.
The two pieces are not identical in scene, but they clearly belong to the same Sabin Crest-O-Gold decorative family. Together, they read as a vanity, dresser, jewelry, dessert, or small serving set, which is a far better fate than being separated into the orphaned china wasteland where single bowls go to contemplate their choices.
Historical Context
Sabin Crest-O-Gold pieces belong to the mid-20th-century American decorative china tradition, when 22K gold accents, romantic historical scenes, and Colonial Revival imagery were widely used across tableware, vanity pieces, and decorative serving sets. These pieces were designed to feel formal, nostalgic, and historically inspired, often borrowing from 18th-century dress, garden scenes, courtship imagery, and European-style ornament.
The wide gold borders and marked 22K decoration were a major selling feature of the Crest-O-Gold line. Pieces like this were often used for serving, display, vanity trays, dresser accents, or formal entertaining. The arched handle on the larger tray gives the piece sculptural presence and makes the set especially useful as a decorative tabletop arrangement.
Condition + Updates
This set is in vintage condition with visible age-related wear. The gold borders show rubbing, scratching, and areas of finish loss. The larger tray’s gilt metal rim and handle show tarnish, patina, and surface wear. The small bowl has visible gold loss and a small rim chip/loss. Both porcelain surfaces show light scuffs, age marks, and signs of prior use.
No major cracks are visible from the photos. The decoration remains clear and visually strong. The set has not been restored; the age, patina, and wear have been preserved.
Because of the 22K gold decoration and metal elements, these pieces should be hand washed only and should not be used in the microwave. Best suited for decorative or light serving use.
Why This Belongs in Your Home
This set brings a layered, collected quality to a vanity, dresser, powder room, tea table, or sideboard. The gold borders add warmth and light, while the Colonial Revival scenes give the set a nostalgic, storybook quality without feeling overly precious.
Use the handled tray for jewelry, perfume bottles, wrapped sweets, guest room styling, or decorative display. The small bowl works beautifully for rings, earrings, matchbooks, wrapped candies, or as a companion piece layered beside the tray. Together, they create a finished vignette rather than two lonely pieces of vintage china trying to justify their existence.
