The Piece
An original oil of the sun low over open water, painted almost entirely in whites, pale blues and a soft sea green, with one warm note: a flat gold disc of sun sitting just above the horizon and dropping a broken gold column down onto the water. Two small white sails sit out on the flat, one either side of the light. Gulls cross in front of the cloud in a few dark strokes and two more stand on the wet sand in the near foreground.
The sky is the most worked part of the painting. It is built up in thick dragged scumbles of white and grey, laid on with a stiff brush and left ridged, so the cloud bank has real relief across the whole upper half of the canvas. Below it the water is thin and smooth by contrast, brushed in long horizontals, and the breaking surf is put in with fast dry-brush flicks that leave the ground showing through. The whole picture is keyed high and kept quiet.
Signed lower right in cursive, Marilyn, with no surname.
Framed in a deep moulding painted slate blue with silver highlights, a carved silvered ribbon band at the inner edge, and a natural linen liner.
History & Provenance
A first name on its own is not an attribution and will not be treated as one here. There is no surname, no date, no place and no inscription visible on the face, and a signature of that kind cannot be traced through auction records or artist databases in any meaningful way. What can be said is what the painting shows: it is an original work in oil, not a print or a reproduction, and the person who made it understood that a calm sunrise wants a busy sky and a still sea rather than the other way round.
The framing is commercial rather than artisan, a manufactured moulding with a fabric liner, of the kind that picture framers supplied in quantity for original canvases in the later twentieth century. The painting and the frame appear to belong together, with no sign that the canvas has been cut down or refitted.
The evidence for a date is thin and is presented as such: a commercially prepared support and a commercially moulded frame with a linen liner. On that basis it is offered as c. 1970–2000, a deliberately wide band. The reverse has not been examined, and the stretcher or backing board, along with any framer's label, would narrow it quickly.

The blue and silver frame picks the sea up rather than the sky, which is why the whole thing reads cool.
Give it soft light from the side and the sky comes alive, because all the texture in the picture is up there in the clouds.
