The Piece
This vintage hardcover copy of The St. Gregory Hymnal and Catholic Choir Book is a substantial Catholic liturgical music volume compiled, edited, and arranged by Nicola A. Montani, one of the most recognized names in early 20th-century American Catholic church music. This is the Complete Edition, revised and enlarged, including the supplement, organ accompaniment, and four-part chorus arrangements.
Bound in a muted blue cloth hardcover with gilt lettering, this book has the presence of a true working church volume: worn, handled, practical, and full of sacred music meant to be sung, played, rehearsed, and probably argued over by at least one very intense choir director. A noble tradition, really.
The front endpaper includes a handwritten ownership note reading “Property of Sacred Heart Church, Pineville, Louisiana,” giving the piece a lovely provenance detail and connecting it directly to its former use within a Catholic parish setting.
Design & Construction
This is a large-format clothbound hymnal and choir book designed for practical liturgical use. The cover is finished in textured blue cloth with gilt-stamped titling across the front and spine. The page edges appear to have a reddish/coral tint, adding visual warmth and a handsome decorative quality when the book is closed.
Inside, the book contains traditional musical notation, hymn lyrics, organ accompaniment, and arrangements suitable for S.A.T.B. four-part chorus. The title page states that the volume includes a complete collection of approved English and Latin hymns, motets, masses, and liturgical music for the various seasons of the ecclesiastical year.
This is not simply a decorative religious book. It is a working musical volume, originally intended for choir lofts, organists, parish music directors, and Catholic worship services.
History & Provenance
The St. Gregory Hymnal and Catholic Choir Book was compiled by Nicola A. Montani, a prominent Catholic musician, composer, editor, and arranger whose work helped shape Catholic liturgical music in the United States during the early 20th century.
The title page shows original copyrights of 1920 and 1922, with later copyright activity in 1940 and a renewal assigned in 1947. The supplement was approved by the Music Committee of the Society of St. Gregory of America in 1941. Based on these details, this copy is best dated to circa 1947–1950s.
The handwritten notation from Sacred Heart Church in Pineville, Louisiana gives the book added historical texture, suggesting it was once part of a parish or choir library. For collectors, musicians, designers, or anyone with an affection for old ecclesiastical objects, that little inscription does more than a generic bookstore sticker ever could. Naturally, provenance wins again. Annoying but true.

Why This Belongs in Your Home
This St. Gregory Hymnal carries the kind of presence that only a genuinely used sacred music book can have. The blue cloth binding, gilt lettering, coral-toned page edges, handwritten church provenance, and aged pages give it visual depth and historical character.
It styles beautifully in a library, music room, study, chapel-inspired interior, antique book stack, or religious collection. For Catholic collectors and church musicians, it offers a meaningful glimpse into pre-Vatican II liturgical music traditions. For designers, it brings texture, color, and soul to a shelf or tabletop without needing to shout for attention like some tragic modern decor object shaped like a knot.
This is a strong piece for anyone drawn to sacred music, Catholic history, antique religious books, or interiors layered with objects that feel storied, useful, and quietly dignified.
Every piece is packed with professional-grade materials: multiple foam layers, double-boxing, directional and fragile handling labels. For large furniture we use custom timber crating. We photograph packing before dispatch and can provide images on request.
