Vintage Two-Section Folding Treatment Table, Slate Blue Upholstery with Nailhead Trim, Adjustable Maple Base, American, c. 1955–1975

The Piece

Two matched halves latch into one six-foot bench, and every part of it was built to travel: a stitched leather carry handle on each skirt, case hasps at the joints, and legs that fold into the body like a suitcase closing. Set up, it stands on peg-adjustable maple legs — a ladder of doweled stops that raises or lowers each end independently — with X-stretchers keeping the whole thing rigid enough to bear a person, because that's the job it was built for. The tops wear slate-blue upholstery, softly distressed like worn saddle leather, finished with a full perimeter of hand-set antiqued nailheads over the pale maple skirt. Split the hasps and it's two benches; fold the legs and it's two cases with handles, gone into a closet.

History & Provenance

This is a portable treatment table — the folding, sectional kind that traveled with massage therapists, chiropractors, team trainers, and visiting nurses through the middle decades of the century. The postwar hardwood versions were built like good luggage: solid maple frames, doweled leg adjustment, case hasps, and stitched leather handles — details that place this table before the aluminum-and-nylon turn of the late seventies. The two-piece latching format is the most versatile of the breed: one table, two benches, or two carrying cases, depending on the day. Tables like this earned their keep in house calls and locker rooms for twenty years, then outlived the trade that made them — which is why the survivors are almost always the well-built ones.

Notes on this piece

The upholstery is new from our workshop: distressed slate-blue vinyl over fresh padding, edged in individually set antiqued nailheads. The maple base was cleaned and left in its original finish. The folding and latching hardware is original and functions as built. We restore pieces to be used, and we'd rather tell you exactly what was done than leave you wondering.
