Product Overview
The Piece
A vintage wooden key fob from The Victoria Falls Hotel, c. 1950s.
Rectangular stained wood plaque with raised metal medallion and safari relief scene.
Medallion reads “The Victoria Falls Hotel” beneath a lion, traveler, and reclining big cat motif.
This mid-century hotel key fob features a dark reddish-brown wood body with beveled edges and an oval bronze-tone metal medallion mounted to the front. The relief design shows a safari-era scene with a lion, a standing traveler, and a reclining big cat, placing the piece firmly within the visual language of historic African railway and luxury hotel travel.
The Victoria Falls Hotel opened in 1904, but this key fob itself is best dated to the mid-20th century, likely c. 1950s, when oversized wooden hotel key fobs were commonly used to make room keys harder to lose and easier to identify at the front desk. Practical, theatrical, and apparently designed for people who needed their hotel key to have the mass of a small treaty.

Condition + Updates
Good vintage condition with age-appropriate wear. The wood plaque shows surface scratches, small scuffs, finish variation, rubbing, and handling marks throughout. The bronze-tone medallion has patina, finish wear, and softened high points from age and use, while the raised hotel text and safari imagery remain visible. The attached split key ring appears newer than the fob and is likely a later replacement.
Why This Belongs in Your Home
This piece brings the atmosphere of mid-century travel into a study, entryway, bar, library, gallery wall, or collected tabletop display. The Victoria Falls Hotel name gives it a specific sense of place, while the wood and metal construction give it more substance than a standard souvenir keychain, thank mercy, because the world has enough flimsy airport trinkets.
It works especially well styled with travel books, old maps, brass objects, campaign furniture, hotel silver, leather trays, framed postcards, or other pieces connected to historic hospitality and railway-era tourism. Small in scale, but rich in story, it adds the kind of detail that makes a room feel collected rather than decorated by a catalog with commitment issues.
