Product Overview
The Piece
A mid-century ceramic plate by W. S. George in the “Petit Point” pattern, produced circa 1940s–1950s.
The plate features a rich cobalt blue ground with raised dot texture and repeating stylized floral medallions set within octagonal panels. The surface design mimics textile embroidery — a visual nod to petit point needlework — translated into glazed relief.
The rim is gently scalloped with molded banding, adding subtle dimensional structure to the form.
The saturated blue glaze varies slightly in tone across the surface, giving depth rather than flat uniform color.
About the Maker
W. S. George Pottery Company was founded in 1904 in East Palestine, Ohio, and became one of the major American dinnerware manufacturers of the 20th century.
The “Petit Point” line reflects mid-century American decorative ceramics, where bold color and textured surfaces became increasingly popular in domestic tableware and display pieces.
This is American production, not European faience.
Historical Context
By the 1940s and 1950s, American ceramics shifted toward expressive color and pattern while maintaining accessible pricing and durability. Cobalt glazes in particular gained popularity for their visual impact and versatility in both traditional and modern interiors.
The raised dot texture and panel repetition echo needlework traditions, bridging craft aesthetics and industrial production.
Condition
Vintage condition consistent with mid-century production.
→ No visible cracks
→ Gloss glaze intact
→ Minor surface wear consistent with age
→ No major rim damage observed
(Confirm in-hand inspection before final listing.)

Why It Belongs in Your Home
This is not delicate china. It’s graphic and architectural.
On a wall, the cobalt reads like artwork. On a table, it anchors neutral linens. Layered with white ceramics, it creates contrast without clutter.
It works particularly well in:
-
Traditional interiors needing saturation
-
Eclectic layered shelving
-
Blue-and-white collections
-
Mid-century styled spaces
The color carries the piece. The texture keeps it from feeling flat.
