Product Overview

The Piece

Antique pressed glass souvenir plate from the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair.
Clear molded glass with raised central relief of Festival Hall & Cascade Gardens, openwork floral lattice border, and gold-painted architectural and floral details.
Marked in raised lettering: “World’s Fair St. Louis 1904” and “Festival Hall & Cascade Gardens.”

This antique souvenir plate commemorates the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair, also known as the Louisiana Purchase Exposition. The center features a raised molded view of Festival Hall and the Cascade Gardens, one of the exposition’s most recognizable architectural scenes. Gold-painted accents highlight the building, gardens, lettering, and floral rim details.

The plate is made from clear pressed glass with an openwork border formed from repeating arches, small molded flowers, and scalloped outer edges. The gilt decoration shows natural wear from age, leaving areas of bright gold mixed with softened, partially worn surface detail. It has exactly the kind of early souvenir charm modern gift shops keep trying to recreate and failing at spectacularly.

Historical Context

The 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair was one of the defining American expositions of the early 20th century, officially known as the Louisiana Purchase Exposition. Souvenir objects from the fair were produced in a wide range of materials, including postcards, medals, glassware, ceramics, spoons, photographs, and decorative plates.

Festival Hall and the Cascade Gardens formed one of the fair’s most iconic views. The grand domed hall, terraced water features, and surrounding exposition architecture became a favorite subject for commemorative objects. This pressed glass plate belongs to that tradition, offering a small but highly decorative record of the fair’s visual culture.

Pressed glass souvenirs like this were made to be affordable keepsakes for visitors, but surviving examples now carry historical interest as early American exposition memorabilia.

Condition + Updates

This piece is in antique condition with visible age-related wear. The clear pressed glass remains visually strong, with raised molded detail throughout the center and openwork rim. The gold-painted decoration shows rubbing, fading, and areas of loss, especially across the central architectural scene and floral accents.

There are light surface scratches, small specks, and minor wear to raised edges consistent with age and handling. No major breaks are visible from the photos. The openwork border appears intact and the raised lettering remains readable.

The plate has not been restored. The original glass form, molded relief, and aged gilt surface have been preserved.

Why This Belongs in Your Home

This plate brings historical depth and delicate texture to a cabinet, wall display, bookshelf, or collected tabletop vignette. The clear glass catches light beautifully, while the worn gold detail gives it a soft antique presence rather than a polished reproduction look.

It pairs well with antique books, brass, pressed glass, transferware, framed ephemera, architectural objects, and other early 20th-century collectibles. For collectors of World’s Fair memorabilia, St. Louis history, or antique souvenir glass, it offers a compact piece tied directly to one of America’s most important expositions.
