Chocolate Pearl and Topaz Two-Strand Illusion Necklace, c. 2000–2015

The Piece

A two-strand illusion necklace in chocolate pearl and topaz, built so the beads appear to float against the skin with almost nothing holding them.

The pearls are a deep bronze-brown with a warm rose cast in the highlight, graduating from roughly eight millimetres up to twelve at the front of the lower strand. Between them sit small faceted beads in amber and topaz carrying an aurora borealis coating, which is what throws the flashes of violet and peacock blue you see when the light moves across it.

Both strands run on a fine gold-tone chain, and every bead is held in place by a pair of tiny gold seed beads crimped to either side of it, so nothing slides. The two strands are staggered rather than parallel, the upper one sitting close at the collarbone and the lower swinging four inches below, which is what gives the necklace depth instead of reading as one flat line.

It closes with a lobster clasp on a two inch extender chain finished with a small ball drop, so it adjusts across several lengths.

History & Provenance

This is production costume jewellery and there is no mark on it, so there is no maker to name and none is claimed.

The findings date it. A lobster clasp running on an extender chain with a ball terminal is modern mass-production hardware, and the illusion construction, where beads are fixed along a chain by crimped seed beads rather than knotted onto silk, is a production method rather than a hand-strung one. The colour dates it too: chocolate and bronze pearls had their commercial run in the 2000s, on the back of the marketing wave for Tahitian and naturally dark pearls, and the warm topaz and amber crystal that goes with them belongs to the same moment.

It is offered as c. 2000 to 2015. The pearls are glass or shell rather than nacre on a natural pearl, and the stones are faceted glass with an applied iridescent coating, both of which are stated here rather than left for a buyer to work out.
