Product Overview

The Piece

Circa 1950s Swiss coin-style novelty brooch.
Marked H.F. & Co. / Made in Chicago, ILL. / USA on the reverse.
Silvertone base metal brooch with overlapping faux Swiss coin forms and raised Helvetia imagery.

This mid-century brooch is designed as a layered arrangement of Swiss coin motifs, with overlapping round forms cast or stamped into a single decorative pin. The largest coin face reads “HELVETICA” and features the profile-style image of Helvetia, the national personification of Switzerland. Smaller coin forms include a standing figure, Swiss shield/cross imagery, and a visible faux coin date that appears to read 1957.

The reverse is flat and clearly marked H.F. & Co. Made in Chicago, ILL. USA, placing the piece within American mid-century novelty and souvenir jewelry production. It has a silvertone finish with age-darkened patina, soft surface wear, and raised details that remain readable.

Condition + Updates

Good vintage condition with surface patina, oxidation, and age-consistent wear throughout. The front retains clear raised coin details, including the Helvetia figure, Swiss shield motif, and decorative coin borders. The reverse maker mark is legible.

The silvertone finish shows dulling, light scratches, and darkened recesses consistent with mid-century costume jewelry. Pin-back functionality should be confirmed before final use, but the body of the brooch presents well as a collectible souvenir-style piece.

Historical Context

Swiss coin jewelry and souvenir pins became popular travel-inspired accessories during the mid-20th century, when European motifs were often translated into brooches, bracelets, charms, and novelty pieces for American buyers. This piece was not made from actual Swiss coins; it was produced as a decorative coin-style brooch.

The use of Helvetia reflects Swiss national coin imagery, while the Chicago maker mark places the brooch firmly in the American novelty-jewelry market. Pieces like this appealed to travelers, collectors, and buyers drawn to European symbolism without the inconvenience of, apparently, acquiring actual European money like a normal person.

Why This Belongs in Your Home

This brooch works beautifully as a small collectible object, jewelry display piece, or wearable vintage accent. Its aged silvertone finish and faux coin design give it the character of a travel souvenir without feeling overly decorative.

It can be styled on a jacket lapel, scarf, hat, textile panel, jewelry tray, or shadowbox. For collectors of mid-century souvenir jewelry, Swiss-themed objects, or American novelty pins, it has the right mix of maker mark, visual interest, and historical charm.
