The Piece

This is an early 20th-century cabinet table, refinished by Viridian Eclection as part of The Hinchman Collective.

The form is restrained and architectural. A compact cabinet body is elevated on slender, turned legs, giving the piece lift and presence without heaviness. The single door features a bookmatched veneer panel, laid in a subtle geometric pattern that introduces quiet movement against an otherwise minimal silhouette. Inside, fixed shelving provides functional storage without excess.

The finish is intentional and grounded.

A black wood stain was applied to fully saturate the age-defined grain, then softened with walnut undertones to retain warmth and dimensionality. The wood remains visible. The surface reads deep, layered, and honest. This is not a flat or modern black. It’s a finish that acknowledges the material beneath it.

Some imperfections remain. They were not chased or erased.

Subtle inconsistencies in the wood, faint marks of use, and small irregularities speak to the piece’s age and original life. These elements could not be fully removed without stripping the piece of its integrity. They were preserved deliberately.
