An early twentieth century neoclassical candlestick with a deep red painted finish over aged copper alloy, carrying the presence of an old world altar candlestick in miniature.
The silhouette is classical, a broad circular stepped base, a ribbed pedestal, a tapered fluted column, beaded banding and a raised candle cup. The red finish has aged well, shifting between burgundy, oxblood and burnished copper depending on the light.
The surface wear is the most compelling part. Raised edges and carved style details show rubbing and exposed metallic tone, while the darker recesses hold age and patina. The result is sculptural, moody and architectural without being overly formal.
History & Provenance
The maker is unknown and no maker's mark is recorded. The attribution rests on idiom and construction, the neoclassical fluted column and beaded banding placing the piece in the early twentieth century, circa 1920s to 1940s.
The underside shows visible oxidation and verdigris, consistent with a copper alloy base metal, likely brass or bronze beneath the painted finish. The exact alloy is untested.
The piece shows age related wear throughout, including rubbing to the red surface, patina, finish loss, oxidation, darkening in the recessed areas and surface marks from use. No major structural damage is visible. It is offered as a decorative vintage object and should be handled with care given its age and finish wear.
