The Piece

This is an early 20th-century sliding-door cabinet, refinished by Viridian Eclection as part of The Hinchman Collective.

The form is low, architectural, and quietly functional. A rectangular cabinet body sits on straight, grounded legs, with dual sliding doors defining the front elevation. The doors are framed with subtle routed detailing, introducing just enough line work to break the surface without ornament. Inside, fixed vertical dividers create structured storage intended for utility, not display.

The finish carries the piece.

A black wood stain was applied to saturate the surface and emphasize the natural grain, then softened with walnut to introduce warmth and depth. The result is dark but not severe. The grain remains visible. The wood reads aged, dimensional, and grounded rather than masked.

As with all Hinchman Collective refinishes, perfection was not the goal.
Minor surface inconsistencies and age-earned marks remain visible. They could not be fully removed without erasing the piece’s history, and they were intentionally preserved.
