Product Overview

The Piece

Set of four vintage Franciscan Coronado small plates.
Made in California, U.S.A., by Franciscan earthenware.
Glazed ceramic with radiating swirl/fluted form in soft pastel tones.

This set includes four small Franciscan earthenware plates in the sculptural Coronado form, known for its radiating swirl pattern and softly scalloped rim. The plates appear in mixed neutral and pastel glazes, including pale pink, cream, beige, and blush tones.

The undersides are stamped Franciscan Earthenware / Made in California / U.S.A. with pattern/color numbers beneath. The Franciscan Ceramics Archive documents Franciscan earthenware marks and California production across the mid-20th century, and Franciscan production was based in California before later production moved overseas.

Condition + Updates

Good vintage condition with age-appropriate wear. The plates show light surface marks, glaze variation, and minor signs of handling consistent with mid-century ceramic tableware. The undersides retain readable Franciscan backstamps.

No obvious large cracks are visible in the provided photos. Rims should be checked closely for small chips or flea bites before final listing, because scalloped ceramic edges apparently exist to torment resellers one tiny nick at a time.

Historical Context

Franciscan dinnerware began under Gladding, McBean & Co. in California and became one of the most recognizable American ceramic tableware lines of the 20th century. Franciscan produced earthenware tableware and art ware in California before the brand’s later ownership and overseas production changes.

The Coronado shape reflects Franciscan’s mid-century interest in molded texture, color, and casual California table settings. Unlike heavily decorated floral patterns, these plates rely on form and glaze: the ribbed swirl catches light, while the pastel colors keep the set soft and easy to style.

Why This Belongs in Your Home

This set works beautifully for small dessert service, bread plates, tea service, vanity styling, or open-shelf display. The pastel mix gives the group a collected look without feeling chaotic, which is a miracle considering humans invented matching sets and then immediately started losing pieces.

They pair well with linen, silverplate, milk glass, pale florals, stoneware, cottage interiors, California pottery collections, and soft vintage table settings. They are useful, sculptural, and small enough to style almost anywhere.
