H.E. Shaw Grand Rapids Cabinet-on-Stand, No. 835

Circa 1920s–1930s | Mahogany, Burl Walnut | Grand Rapids, Michigan

A striking example of early 20th-century Grand Rapids craftsmanship, this cabinet-on-stand from H.E. Shaw Furniture Co. embodies the refinement and attention to detail that earned Michigan its title as the Furniture Capital of America.

Crafted around the 1920s–1930s, this piece features bookmatched crotch-mahogany doors framed with chamfered edges and hand-carved volutes. The lower section houses a single wide drawer in burled walnut veneer, balanced by turned baluster legs and a serpentine stretcher base. Inside the door, an inscribed “13” appears—a workshop production number used to pair doors and cases during assembly.

The original paper label remains affixed to the interior, reading:
“H.E. Shaw Furniture Co., Manufacturers, Grand Rapids, Michigan — No. 835”
— accompanied by the triangular “Made in Grand Rapids” mark, a registered hallmark of authenticity and regional excellence.

Historical Notes

The H.E. Shaw Furniture Co. operated in Grand Rapids during the early decades of the 20th century, producing fine-quality furniture in Colonial and European Revival styles. Grand Rapids was home to dozens of premier cabinetmakers during this period, and Shaw pieces—especially labeled examples—represent a notable intersection of American craftsmanship and industrial precision.

The cabinet’s numbered mark and label confirm its authenticity as a factory-labeled Grand Rapids production, dating to the post–World War I boom in domestic fine furniture manufacturing, which declined by the Great Depression era.

Styling & Design Applications

→ As a bar cabinet: Transform the upper storage with crystal, decanters, and curated spirits for a warm, moody bar vignette.
→ As an entry statement: A perfect anchor piece for an entry hall paired with a gilt mirror and oil painting.
→ In a study or library: Use the upper compartment to conceal barware, books, or linens—the patina pairs beautifully with leather upholstery and dark paint tones.
→ Commercial design use: Ideal as a display or host stand in boutique hotels or luxury retail environments seeking period character.

Care Recommendations

Dust with a soft lint-free cloth; condition the wood occasionally with beeswax or microcrystalline polish. Avoid direct sunlight and excessive moisture to preserve the finish and veneer integrity.
