The Piece
Large vintage hammered copper amphora-form urn vase, c. 1930s–1950s.
Copper body with hand-worked surface, rolled rim, rounded shoulder, narrow foot, and ornate cast side handles with scroll and foliate detailing.
Heavy construction with visible verdigris, oxidation, darkened interior patina, and aged surface variation throughout.
This substantial copper urn has a classical amphora silhouette, with a rounded body rising into a tall cylindrical neck and flanked by dramatic cast handles. The body shows a warm copper surface with hammered texture, tonal variation, and a natural patina developed over time. The side handles are highly decorative, with curled scroll terminals, leaf-like forms, and raised ornamental details that give the piece an old-world architectural presence.
The surface carries visible age, including oxidation, verdigris, scuffs, spotting, and a darker interior. A greenish band around the body appears consistent with oxidation, soldering, construction residue, or age-related surface reaction along the vessel’s joined area. The base shows a crimped or folded construction edge with heavier wear and corrosion, which supports its age and workshop-made character. Decorative, heavy, slightly dramatic, and definitely not one of those soulless mass-market vases pretending to have a personality.

Historical Context
Hammered copper vessels became widely popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, especially within Arts & Crafts, Mission, Spanish Revival, Mediterranean Revival, and old-world decorative interiors. Copper was valued for its warmth, malleability, and ability to develop a rich surface patina over time. Pieces like this were often made as decorative urns, umbrella vessels, entryway accents, hearthside objects, or mantel-scale display pieces.
The amphora form draws from classical antiquity, while the ornate handles give the vase a revivalist quality. The result is a piece that feels architectural rather than delicate, made to hold visual weight in a room. Its heavy construction, hand-worked copper surface, aged oxidation, and cast handle details place it within the decorative metalware tradition of the early-to-mid 20th century.
Condition + Updates
This piece is in aged vintage condition with heavy surface character throughout. The copper body shows oxidation, verdigris, scuffs, scratches, spotting, darkening, and natural tonal variation. The handles show heavier oxidation and finish wear, especially in recessed details and along the high points. The interior is darkened with visible patina and oxidation.
The base shows wear, corrosion, and folded or crimped construction details. A greenish band around the body is visible and appears consistent with oxidation or construction-related surface reaction. This piece has not been polished or restored; the aged patina has been preserved. Because of the interior oxidation and older seams, it is recommended for decorative use only and should not be assumed watertight.
Why This Belongs in Your Home
This urn brings scale, texture, and old-world warmth into a space. The copper surface has the kind of depth that newer decorative pieces try and fail to fake, usually with tragic enthusiasm. The ornate side handles give it sculptural presence, while the patina keeps it grounded and collected rather than overly polished.
It works well on a console, entry table, fireplace hearth, pedestal, large bookshelf, or dining room sideboard. Style it empty as a sculptural object, with dried branches, preserved stems, or as part of a layered vignette with stone, wood, plaster, antique books, or dark metal.
