The Piece
An expansive Western landscape, identified on the reverse as Black Rock Ranch. Rolling green ground is broken by dark volcanic rock formations and shallow pools of water, and the eye travels across them toward distant mesas under a broad, airy sky. The land is painted with weight: geology and openness carry the picture rather than any story.
The brushwork is confident and physical, with thick paint building the rock and terrain, set against softer, blended passages in the sky. The palette is grounded in moss green, slate grey, warm earth and pale blue, and the scene feels observed and specific, a real place rather than an invented one. It is housed in a gilt wood frame that warms the earthy colour without competing with it.
History & Provenance
The painting is signed "PETERSEN" in white capitals at the lower left, with the title Black Rock Ranch inscribed on the reverse. No first name appears anywhere on the canvas, and the signature does not match the documented signatures of the listed painters of that surname, so no attribution is made. The painter remains unidentified. The location of Black Rock Ranch has not been identified either, and the inscription is the clearest lead to both.
It came to Viridian Eclection as part of a single lot of landscapes, every one signed the same way in the same white capitals, and the group appears to have come from one household. None of the group is dated. On the shared hand, palette and handling of the group and the regional Western landscape manner they all follow, it is offered as c. 1950–1970. It is one of three paintings in the shop from that group, alongside a Southwestern desert village and a winter mountain scene.

Why It Belongs in Your Home
This painting offers scale and calm without spectacle. Its wide format makes it a natural fit above a sofa, a console or a low bookcase, in a living room, study or hallway where it has room to breathe. The grounded palette sits easily with neutral interiors, rustic wood and mid century furniture, and the named place on its reverse gives it a quiet story to tell. It anchors a room through depth, texture and a strong sense of place.
Hang it out of direct sun and away from heat sources and humidity. Dust the frame with a soft, dry brush, and leave any cleaning of the painted surface to a conservator.
