The Piece
A winter landscape in cool, quiet light. Rolling snow covered ground fills the foreground, a dense stand of evergreens holds the middle distance, and a mountain range rises beyond against the sky. The palette is built from layered blues, soft whites and muted greens, with heavier paint laid on to give the snow, the brush and the terrain their texture.
The composition is horizontal and steady: the peaks anchor the top of the picture while the open snowfield draws the eye back into depth. The brushwork is loose but controlled, especially in the trees and sky, and the scene has a cold stillness rather than drama. It is mounted in a gilt wood frame with a linen liner.
History & Provenance
The painting is signed "PETERSEN" in white capitals at the lower left and carries no other inscriptions or labels. No first name appears anywhere on the canvas, and the signature does not match the documented signatures of the listed painters of that surname, so no attribution is made. The painter remains unidentified.
It came to Viridian Eclection as part of a single lot of landscapes, every one signed the same way in the same white capitals, and the group appears to have come from one household. None of the group is dated. On the shared hand, palette and handling of the group and the regional Western landscape manner they all follow, it is offered as c. 1950–1970. It is one of three paintings in the shop from that group, alongside a Southwestern desert village and a ranch scene inscribed Black Rock Ranch.

Why It Belongs in Your Home
A winter scene brings a particular calm to a room, and this one does it without sentimentality. The cool palette and horizontal composition anchor a wall without overwhelming what sits around it, which makes it a natural choice for a study, a reading room or a living space with a quieter rhythm. It pairs well with wood furniture, leather and layered collections of maps or regional pictures, and hung beside its desert and ranch companions it makes a small gallery of the West through the seasons.
Hang it out of direct sun and away from heat sources and humidity. Dust the frame with a soft, dry brush, and leave any cleaning of the painted surface to a conservator.
