A primitive candle holder in dark weathered metal, made as a broad circular dish on three angled feet with a single spike rising from its center.
The dish top is worked with a radiating pattern of etched lines running out from the spike, and its perimeter is softly scalloped and slightly irregular. The effect is close to a small forged sunburst.
The surface is a patinated black, with scattered rust toned wear and visible oxidation. The palette runs black, charcoal, deep brown and warm rust.
There is no ornament beyond form, texture and age. The hand worked quality of the metal is plain throughout.
History & Provenance
No maker's mark appears in the images, so the piece cannot be attributed to a hand or a workshop.
Nor is it dated. The condition is described as vintage or antique style, so the period is to be confirmed, and the attribution rests on the form and the hand fashioned construction alone.
That form belongs to the early utilitarian tradition of domestic ironwork, in which a taper was held on a spike rather than seated in a socket. The dish beneath caught the wax. The three angled feet gave stability on an uneven surface, which was the ordinary condition of an early table or shelf.
