The Piece
A charming circa 1940s primitive cottage three-drawer accent chest, newly refinished by Lupo Select at Viridian Eclection with a soft washed blue-green finish and warm exposed wood drawer fronts. Small in scale but full of character, this piece carries the relaxed utility of early-to-mid 20th-century country furniture with a fresh, design-forward finish.
The chest features three stacked drawers, each with a distinctive circular cutout and horizontal wooden pull. The plank-style top, simple square legs, and straightforward case construction give it that honest handmade quality older cottage pieces tend to have before someone in a factory decided furniture needed to be made entirely of sadness and particle board.
Design & Construction
This piece appears to be an early-to-mid 20th-century primitive or country utility chest, likely originally made for practical household storage. The construction is simple and sturdy, with a rectangular case, straight legs, paneled sides, plank-style top, and three functional drawers.
The original finish showed aged pale blue-green paint, worn edges, surface marks, and visible use consistent with older painted cottage furniture. Viridian Eclection reworked the piece to preserve its primitive form while giving it a softer, more elevated finish. The drawer fronts have been brought back to a warmer exposed wood tone, while the frame retains a washed blue-green patina that feels relaxed, coastal, and collected.
The circular drawer cutouts are the most distinctive detail. They give the chest a subtle handmade character and visual interest without feeling overly ornate. It works beautifully as a small nightstand, entryway storage piece, powder room chest, or cottage accent table.
History & Provenance
Based on the original construction, plank top, drawer design, wear patterns, and old painted surface, this piece is best dated to the early-to-mid 20th century, with a practical listing date of circa 1940s.
It reflects the kind of small-scale utility furniture often used in bedrooms, porches, cabins, cottages, and modest homes where pieces were built for function first. The design is unpretentious, useful, and quietly charming, which is apparently rare enough now that we have to celebrate it.
Why This Belongs in Your Home
This chest is ideal for a space that needs storage without the visual weight of a full dresser. Its compact scale makes it especially useful beside a bed, next to a chair, in a bathroom, tucked into an entryway, or styled under a mirror.
The refinished surface gives it a soft, layered look that works well with cottage, coastal, farmhouse, rustic, bohemian, or collected vintage interiors. The contrast between the warm wood drawer fronts and washed blue-green body keeps it from feeling too polished, while still making it feel intentional and interior-ready.
