Product Overview

The Piece

A Wedgwood Jasperware plate in classic lilac (often referred to as periwinkle) with applied white classical relief.

The plate features a central neoclassical scene in raised matte white — a grouping of figures rendered in crisp, low-relief detail. Surrounding the center is a radial fluted field, framed by a band of acanthus-style ornamentation in contrasting white relief along the rim.

The matte body and applied relief create depth without gloss. Jasperware is not glazed in the traditional sense; it carries a soft, unglazed, almost stone-like surface that defines its character.

The composition is balanced and restrained — exactly what Wedgwood did best.

Maker & Origin

Impressed on underside:

WEDGWOOD
MADE IN ENGLAND

This mark format is consistent with mid-to-late 20th century production, most likely 1970s–1980s.

Wedgwood Jasperware has been produced since the late 18th century, but the color tone, mark style, and execution here align with later 20th century manufacture.

This is authentic Wedgwood, not reproduction, not modern decorative copy.

Historical Context

Jasperware was introduced by Josiah Wedgwood in the 1770s and became one of the most recognizable ceramic styles in English decorative arts.

While early Jasper pieces are highly collectible and date to the 18th and 19th centuries, Wedgwood continued production well into the 20th century, maintaining classical motifs and matte pastel bodies.

By the 1960s–1980s, Jasperware was widely purchased as decorative art rather than functional tableware — often displayed on walls or in cabinets.

This piece reflects that era of continued classical revival.

Why It Belongs in Your Home

Jasperware is architectural.

It brings structure and restraint to a space that might otherwise lean soft. The matte lilac reads calm and grounded, while the white relief provides contrast without shine.

It works particularly well:

  • On a gallery wall

  • In a glass-front cabinet

  • Styled above a mantel

  • Layered with other classical objects

This is not decorative clutter. It’s classical continuity.
