Catherine “Kat” Allibe

Kat Allibe is a French-born contemporary figurative painter working in Reno, Nevada, and the originator of Emotional Impressionism — a method built on deliberate incompletion. The face is never fully resolved. The background is emotional rather than architectural. The viewer is asked to finish the picture. In her own formulation, the work is not portraiture. “My paintings are not portraits. They are mirrors.”

Over more than three decades she produced more than one hundred and fifty works — oils, acrylics, pastels, mixed media — almost entirely outside the gallery system, without exhibition, representation, or sale. Viridian Eclection is her private dealer for original works. Every painting comes directly from her studio with unbroken provenance and a signed certificate of authenticity.

She painted for thirty years with no audience, no dealer, and no intention to sell. That is the whole reason the work looks the way it does — nothing in it was ever shaped to be bought.

The Painting That Came Back

She left it in France. We found it on a church wall in Reno.

There were the roses. There was the heart. The exact pressure of my hand, preserved across decades. I remembered painting it instantly, though I had forgotten it ever existed.

Kat Allibe painted this canvas in France in 1989, at twenty-five, and left it behind when she moved to Hong Kong five years later. Her father sold the house. The paintings scattered. She assumed they were gone.

More than thirty-five years later Jessica Lupo walked into a church in Reno, saw a floral canvas on the wall, and asked the priest whether it was for sale. She researched the signature and found the artist living in the same city. The original frame was intact. So was the tape Kat had put on the back in 1989.

We did not set out to represent an artist. We bought a picture we could not explain, and the explanation turned out to be living down the road.

Emotional Impressionism

A painting is finished when there is nothing left to define.

Hair: not hair, movement. Eyes: not eyes, awareness. Mouth: not lips, silence. Neck: not anatomy, grace. Background: not a place, a memory.

Allibe works in layers and then takes them apart. Paint is applied and scraped back. Surfaces are scratched through. Colour is buried beneath colour and reopened. Gold is introduced and then deliberately distressed. Subtraction is part of the method, and the evidence of it stays visible on the surface.

She paints to a written set of rules: never finish every feature, leave unfinished passages, commit to one unexpected emotional colour against a warm ground, hold to no more than three dominant colours, and let a third of the canvas breathe. Applied consistently, they make the work identifiable across a room.
