The Piece
A female figure is positioned slightly off-center, turned away from the viewer yet firmly grounded in the frame. Her posture is upright and contained. Dark lenses obscure the eyes, redirecting attention to the structure of the face, the line of the neck, and the tension held in stillness rather than expression.
The background is divided into opposing color fields. Warm, saturated tones press from behind while cooler blues and darker passages open forward space. The surface remains active, with visible brushwork, drips, and layered transitions left intact.
Primary Description
The Distance Within is built on restraint rather than narrative. The figure does not perform emotion or gesture toward resolution. Instead, presence is established through compositional balance, controlled distortion, and color used as structure rather than symbol.
The obscured gaze creates distance without detachment. Movement is implied but unresolved, giving the work a sense of pause rather than escape. The painting holds its tension internally, allowing the figure to remain composed, self-contained, and complete.
