The Piece
A bright white mid-century oval platter with a softly scalloped rim and a single, inky-black line tracing its edge—classic American diner china pared down to its essentials. The wide, open well is left entirely undecorated, letting the form, weight, and contrast of black on white do the work.
Made by Homer Laughlin as part of their Best China line, this piece was designed not as fragile cabinet ware, but as hardworking hotel & restaurant service: vitrified, chip-resistant, and meant to move from kitchen pass to table and back again hundreds of times over. On a modern counter or dining table, it reads as quietly graphic—mid-century utility turned minimal statement.
The backstamp reads:
“Homer Laughlin
Best China
U.S.A.
DDB-1”
placing it in 1959, at the dawn of the Best China era.
Design & Construction
→ Form & Style
-
Generous oval platter, approx. 11–12" long
-
Gently scalloped rim with soft, shell-like undulations
-
Clean, undecorated well with a subtle, raised inner cavetto line
-
Single black line circling the outer rim—crisp, even, and slightly glossy
-
Slightly upturned lip for easy handling and to catch sauces or juices
The silhouette is restrained but not severe: the scalloped edge keeps it from feeling purely industrial, while the black line gives it a sharp, graphical profile on a table or shelf.
→ Materials
-
Vitrified restaurant china (Homer Laughlin’s durable Best China body)
-
High-fire white glaze with a smooth, glassy surface
-
Black rim line applied over or under glaze, then fired for permanence
-
Stamped backmark with maker’s name and code
Best China was formulated for commercial use—dense, non-porous, and resistant to heat and repeated washing—so it carries more heft in the hand than typical household porcelain.
History & Provenance
Homer Laughlin, based in Newell, West Virginia, was one of America’s largest and most influential potteries. By the late 1950s, as postwar dining culture shifted toward coffee shops, motels, and institutional cafeterias, the company developed Best China: a vitrified line specifically for hotels, restaurants, and railroads.
The DDB-1 backstamp belongs to this early Best China period and, combined with the styling, places the platter around 1959. Black-rimmed white shapes like this were mainstays of mid-century American service ware—neutral enough to work in any interior, formal enough for hotel dining rooms, and practical for everyday use.
Today, surviving pieces speak to that era of bottomless coffee, chrome stools, and laminated menus: quietly iconic forms that have slipped from the background into collectible status.
Condition
From your photos, the platter presents in very good vintage condition:
-
No obvious chips, cracks, or structural damage
-
Glaze retains strong gloss with expected light utensil or stacking marks visible only on close inspection
-
Black rim line remains intact with minor, age-consistent wear at a few high points
-
Backstamp clear and legible
Fully functional for serving, and handsome enough to live out on display.
