The Piece
Thirty-six by twenty-four inches — a tall, narrow canvas, and the format matters. The subject is a woman from an old northern Italian family who has spent a lifetime learning to enter a room without revealing too much, and the compressed width holds her the way the expectation does.
The wine glass is the whole painting. Allibe gives it the loosest handling on the canvas — local, imperfect, alive, in her description of the wine itself — while the figure is held in the composed register the Contessa has perfected. The tension between those two levels of finish is the subject: a woman who wants permission to be unfinished, painted by an artist whose entire method is refusing to finish things. The face, characteristically, is not fully resolved.
History & Provenance
Kat Allibe is a French-born contemporary painter working in Reno, Nevada, and the originator of Emotional Impressionism. She painted privately for over thirty years, producing more than 150 works that never entered the market, before entering formal study at the Milan Art Institute in 2025.
Viridian Eclection is her private dealer. This painting comes directly from the studio, with a certificate of authenticity issued and signed by the artist.
