The Piece
This hand-chased Indian brass wall charger is a striking example of traditional artisan metalwork, produced in India during the mid- to late-20th century using time-honored repoussé and chasing techniques. The composition is built in concentric relief, radiating outward from a softly domed center into scalloped petal bands and dense foliate engraving that covers the entire surface without interruption.
Each leaf, frond, and scallop has been individually worked by hand, creating subtle variations in depth and line that distinguish true workshop craftsmanship from machine-pressed decorative wares. The surface retains a warm, naturally developed patina—silvered highlights over golden brass tones—that enhances the dimensionality of the relief rather than obscuring it.
The reverse is left unadorned, with a simple hanging slot consistent with wall display chargers intended as architectural accents rather than table service pieces. This format was commonly produced by skilled metalworkers in northern India, particularly in regions such as Rajasthan and Moradabad, where decorative brasswork has been a continuous craft tradition for centuries.
This is not a mass-produced tourist object. It is a deliberate, labor-intensive decorative form designed to command visual space through texture, repetition, and scale.
Design & Construction
→ Hand-hammered brass with repoussé and chased detailing
→ Concentric scalloped relief with dense foliate patterning
→ Softly domed central field surrounded by layered petal bands
→ Natural aged patina with warm tonal variation
→ Flat reverse with hanging slot for wall display
Condition
Very good vintage condition.
The brass surface shows consistent age-appropriate patina and light surface wear, with no structural damage, cracks, or warping observed. The relief remains crisp and well-defined throughout. Minor tonal variations and surface marks are consistent with hand-worked brass and natural aging.
Why It Belongs in Your Home
This charger functions as architectural ornament rather than accessory. Hung alone, it serves as a focal point; layered with art or textiles, it adds depth and historical texture. It pairs especially well with plaster walls, dark paint, stone, linen, or wood interiors, and complements spaces that value materiality over minimalism.
This is a piece for collectors who appreciate craftsmanship you can feel at arm’s length—work that rewards close inspection without requiring explanation.
